SCULPTED CUBE   PUNE.  B/UP : 5500 SQ.FT   COST : 2.0 CR.  COMPLETED IN 2008                                                                                                   ARCHITECTURE

Simplicity of forms and easy circulation are the major attributes to this design.

The clients had bought a plot admeasuring 5500 sq.ft, amidst one of the fastest growing urban areas of Pune city. The brief given was to have a big parking area and to have a house having 5 bedrooms, one study, Living, kitchen etc.

The House is conceived as a sculpted cube, where spaces have been carved out to create an interesting play of positive and negative masses. The whiteness of the strong geometrical form helps to clarify it, which is reassuringly solid in nature.

Stilt parking is provided at the ground and the house starts at the first floor level. To negotiate the effect of climbing upto the first floor, the patio at the entrance acts as mid landing.

As the adjacent houses were very close to the plot, introvert planning was adopted with a central court in the living and the dining areas which binds the whole spatial volume. This central courtyard area is well lit with ventilated skylight on the top, which helps in evacuating the hot air inside the house, thus making way for the cool breeze from the west side. Placement of large openings on the north and the skylight at the top enables optimum use of controlled daylight. The service areas are consciously located on the southern side forming buffer to the habitable spaces.

The Living and the dining areas open out into the covered terrace which has the pooja. This pooja tower forms the focus of attraction and is visible from all the common spaces inside the house. The tower has ferro-crete curtains at the top which brings in diffused light inside the pooja room, creating a calm, peaceful and meditative atmosphere. Provision of big windows with low sills ensures a feeling of openness inside the house.
